When I was 20, this book was recommended to me by a guy who lived in his mother's attic, drank jugs of fine wine, and read books all day long. He couldn't drive a car, but he could use an old fashioned sewing machine, and introduced me to what was called, "the lung." Thanks, Bill, wherever you are. This book is unbelievable.
When I moved to Nebraska, I finally came across this book at Barnes and Noble and the title seemed to flash at me as I remembered Bill from that attic telling me how haunting of a read it was. I bought it, read it within a few days (as long as it is, and it long!) Even staying up until 4am just to finish it. It was, and still is, one of the best books I've ever read. The way it's written is sporadic, and fascinating Both a mystery and a horror all in one. It'll hold your attention the entire time. And I'll be honest, this book has caused me to have strange nightmares about rooms that keep appearing and increasing in number, unseen corridors, and impending doom. Bill wasn't joking when he said haunting. There were plenty of nights after reading this book that I would lie awake and just think about it. It's not a short book by any means as I stated above. This is a 662 page novel. I don't re-read books unless I'm referencing something, but this may be the only fictional book I would be excited to re-read. It's absolutely incredible.
