The Worm in the Apple was published in 2003. Unfortunately, the message is more relatable perhaps now more than ever. I recommend every parent read this book. Here are some facts I gathered from reading this book;
*School boards are overwhelmingly made up of obese women, far-left, and LGBT groups. *During the 1899-1900 school year only 6.4% of students graduated with a HS diploma. The number climbed to where it is now where most students are simply pushed through. *HS has been dumbed down to the point where 1/2 of students testing at a mentally retarded level IQ (>70) are graduating, while the more intelligent student are dropping out and have been for over 40 yrs (approx 1/4) *The NEA has endorsed every democratic candidate since 1976 and in 1999-2000 contributed 1 out of every $10 to Al Gore's campaign for Congress. *The average teacher makes $30,000/yr and often have to pay for their own supplies if there's not enough in the budget. Meanwhile the Teacher Trust & Union members make a minimum of $100,000/yr and get incredible benefits such as: new union car every 3 years or 48,000 miles, 100% all expenses paid medical insurance including non-medical needs, 100% of total salary pay when retired, first-class airfaire, reimbursement for luggage/travel companion, credit cards, phone cards, reimbursement for at-home office supplies, reimbursement for absences from outside paid employment other than teaching, monthly income for child or home care, free laundry, dry cleaning, gym membership while traveling, reimbursement for rental/parking charges for private aircraft use & monthly membership in flying club, free moving expenses, interest-free car loans, and incarceration pay. So about those budget problems we hear about annually? *Vocab of average American teen went from 25,000 words to just 10,000 worst in the last 50 years. Yikes! *The goal is no longer about students performing at their best or how well they do on standardized tests, it's about how comfortable everyone feels. From students, to teachers to parents, comfort and inclusion is the goal. I could go on and on about this book, but I think it best for you to just read it yourself to get the rest of the information.
10/10
